Don't know how long "Nelson" scores have been around for, but certainly it's been quite a while. The reason Shep skips around the way he does is because the superstition is that you've got the best chance of avoiding misfortune if you've got both legs off the floor. So everyone in the dressing-room always sits with the feet up on a Nelson score.
And it doesn't count beyond 999 (noneupal Nelson), because the whole point is one eye, one arm, one leg - adding up to three. 1111 isn't actually a multiple of 111 - 222, 333, 444, 555, 666, 777, 888 and 999 are. But you don't often see scores of 666, 777 or 888, and we've never yet (in a Test-match, at least) seen a score of 999.

i dunno wha relevance this has, but to disprove a myth about australians "bogey" number being 87, someone caluculated every score made by australian batsman in test history, and apart from 0, 16 was the most common number to be dismissed on...

When was the test done Simon?

I guess it would take a long time to go through every Test innings by every person who has walked out to bat for Australia in Tests and made at least 1.

Well of course it's not going to be the score people are most dismissed on. It is just a myth, but people say that it always seemd to be the score that bastman that was looking good got out on.

I'm not too dissimilar a batsman to Bradman.
Both of us have batting averages below 100.

    yeh it wasnt long ago,

but in fact, less than 20 batsman have been out or not out for 87 in thr history of australian test cricket also disproves this theory.
also something else ive been told is that Jamie Cox is the only australian batsman to get out for 87 in both innings for a first class game...

Does anybody know why this superstition is called Nelson? Is it in some way related to the great Admiral Lord Haratio Nelson?

    Just found these possible explainations:-

    So why a Nelson?

Suggestion 1. "The origins of this term lie in the erroneous notion that Admiral Nelson had one eye, one arm, and one leg; in reality, of course, Nelson lost an arm and an eye but retained the use of both legs.

Suggestion 2. "It is possible that the number refers to three of his great naval victories, perhaps Copenhagen, the Nile, and Trafalgar:

    - thus giving won-won-won.

    It's interesting stuff, isn't it.

Where it came from, I have no idea, although if I had to hazard a guess, I would go back to BJ years (Before Jonners) - even to the great John Arlott (he who came up with the funniest ad-lib ever when Engineer missed a ball which turned sharply and the batsmen scampered a single - to the gleeful chorus of 'Bedi Byes'.

It stood for (when I first heard about it) "One eye, one arm, one objective" - as in Lord Horatio Nelson.

Didn't know that, definitely a myth then. We'll jsut call it the 'Cox Conspiracy' then, more accurate.

Can't believe that...surely there were more people dismissed on 1 than 16?

I'm sure I wnnt through and counted the 0's, 1's and 16's a bit ago and found that to be a cricketing 'urban myth' - perhaps I just did 0 and 16.
