    Furball Assessment Thread

    He's a well-meaning lad, and he tries hard, but the quality just is not there most of the time.

    Being the altruistic and charitable character that I am, I have decided that I will make an effort to help him improve his posting, so that one day he might become ok at it.

    I will do this through providing feedback on his posts, and giving them a grade of sorts. My hope is that he will take my comments on board and try to develop best practice.

    The criteria/metrics I will be using to evaluate his posts are as follows:

    - Introduction;

    - Understanding of key issues;

    - Evidence of reading an/or choice of appropriate concepts;

    - Analysis;

    - Presentation and evaluation of evidence; and

    - Structure, clarity, use of grammar and correct spelling

    First instalment to appear in due course.

    Ok, we'll start with this example:

    Introduction:

    Topic well focused but introduction and context incomplete.

    Understanding of key issues:

    Very limited understanding of any of the key issues.

    Evidence of reading an/or choice of appropriate concepts:

    Little evidence of reading or limited /inappropriate use of material; unclear theoretical framework; important work uncited and key concepts ignored.

    Analysis:

    Poor application of knowledge to the topic. This may be because the topic was not properly understood. Practically no analysis or evaluation of the relevant material.

    Presentation and evaluation of evidence:

    Almost no evidence to support arguments. Uncritical acceptance of material. Poor and incomplete citation. Unjustified conclusion.

    Structure, clarity, use of grammar and correct spelling:

    Reasonably clear presentation. Few grammatical or spelling mistakes.

    Overall comment:

    It is clear from reading this post that the author has made a concerted effort to advance a critical perspective on, what was at the time, a salient topic. For this they are deserving of credit. However, there are many reservations to be had as to the overall quality of their execution. Much of the prose is suggestive of some considerable gaps in knowledge. The arguments and conclusions presented appear confused/muddled, and are not consistently developed. In order for this post to have been of a satisfactory level the author would have been required to demonstrate a greater depth of analytical rigour. Disappointing.

    I'm enjoying this mini-renaissance in OT, largely thanks to sledger. He's a great human being.
