    Album of the year

I mean it’s obviously Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino (Arctic Monkeys) but I suppose you’re all entitled to an opinion

Honourable mention to Coup De Grace (Miles Kane) thus proving the world would be a better place if Last Shadow Puppets made music more often than every eight years

Never quite 'got' Arctic Monkeys tbh. Like, I see the appeal I suppose, but does not click with me at all.

Not sure on musically but lyrically it feels like something you’d like

It’s like Alex Turner had a chat with Sledger and turned shandy pants’ words into poetry

Barely listened to anything new this year. I liked Julia Holter's "Aviary" a lot though.

I think the only thing I listened to from this year was the Arctic Monkeys album. Didn't hate it or like it, or feel anything for it.

I'm sure I'd be fine with it at a concert, with booze in me, and if I was surrounded in a field of dancing hippies and students jacked up on acid tabs.

Been listening to stuck on a puzzle and most of AM on repeat. Don't really dig any of the new stuff though.

Arctics are probably my favourite ever band and I didn't feel any desire to finish Tranquility. Sad but true

Would be keen to listen to a few more recommendations as the last album I genuinely loved was released in 2017.

Stuck on a puzzle is such a hidden gem. Love that whole EP.

I am not someone who feels it’s essential that bands always look to do something new, but it’s remarkable really when you listen to the Arctics albums back to back how much of a journey they’ve been on. To borrow a phrase Brumby once used about (I think) blur, they’ve been able to push the envelope without losing the keys to the box called ‘tunes’.

Tranquility is just magic for me. A big part of it is that the day it was released I travelled down to London - it was the night before the play off final. In my hotel room my daughter was watching some drivel on Netflix so I cracked open a bottle of red and stuck my headphones in. The music blew me away and I’ll always associate it with that nervous tension I felt and the ultimate glory that would follow the next day. Hard not to love it in those circumstances anyway but i just found it seeping into my consciousness, in the right way. The melodies aren’t the singalongs of WPSIATWIN or even AM, but they grab you, they demand you listen to them. The lyrics, as you’d expect from Turner commentate on modern life but not in a way where you feel you’re being lectured, like some artists tend to feel the need to do.

    A masterpiece, for me.

Tranquility is dull, empty drivel. And I like the Arctic Monkeys.

Loads of great stuff this year if you dig around. ****ed Up, Rolo Tomassi, IDLES, Hookworms, Superchunk all made what feel like instant classics to me.

You Won't Get What You Want by Daughters is the most oppressively dark thing I've heard in years and it's great, if you like music that kind of makes you feel grimy and ****.
