    Is taxation theft?

A friend of mine posted a picture on Facebook declaring taxation theft. What does CW think?

Minimum of five words in a response, and reasoning must be provided rather than a yes or no.

I'm afraid not, this question is for the whole of CW, not just him. His opinion will of course be welcomed, though.

Yes, because I earned my money fair and square and the government should be financing itself via the printing press.

I would describe it as "violence" as well as "theft" tbh.

All property is theft, thus taxation is handling stolen goods so, in answer to the question posed, no

Provided that it is spent wisely and distributed equitably, then no. However, things like Bronwyn Bishop's helecopter jaunts are the thin end of the wedge.

So I guess whether tax is theft or not is relative to how corrupt and inept the government is. In Zimbabwe for example it would be all theft.

All governments are corrupt and inept, by definition. Smash the state.

I think a lot of people have an instinctive reaction to this question that basically boils down to "I think taxation is good but I think theft is bad, so therefore therefore taxation can't be theft", and then they try to state this as some sort of contrived justification full of subjectivity like what watson posted. I think the only vaguely coherent way to argue 'no' is to mount a case against the very concept of property rights, like fredfertang's post.

It absolutely is, IMO. This doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't exist -- you could well argue that theft isn't the worst thing in the world and that it can be justified sometimes through legitimate authority or the democratic process or something else, but this isn't an argument against it being theft; it's just an argument against theft being wrong in all circumstances.

Taxation owed to the state actually belongs to the state. So you as a taxpayer are simply holding on to it until it is transferred to the rightful owner.
