How much you hurt the next day mostly depends on what you're used to, it's not just that bad all the time. Also squats and lunges are two of the achiest strength exercises you can do, most won't give you anywhere near as much DOMS.

Yeah. The only thing worse is deadlifts. Puts my back out of action for a week if I restart after a long period of doing **** all.

A tad but you're screwed if you think the deadlift is a pulling exercise. It may look that way but the cue is to push the floor away with your feet. That and your initial set-up i.e. hips not too low, shins real close too the bar, etc.

Also, watch some of the classic deadlifters on youtube...Eddie Hall, Ed Coan, Hafthor even. They move serious weights but observe their setup at the exact point of the lift for the most optimum leverage.

You're gonna be sore if you do deadlifts, squats etc after not having done them for weeks. That's normal.

Hah, I remember the first time I did squats. Horrible form plus first time equated to constant pain for a week or two. Try a warm bath with epsom salt. And really pay attention to your form. I would recommend something very light (maybe just the bar and no weights) and work on improving which way your feet are pointing, position of your back. Once you feel comfortable, start adding weights. Alan Thrall has some great videos on form on YT.

Same goes for deadlifts. I've only ever done them with dumbbells but form is even more important with deadlifts.

LOL, I haven't seen the inside of a gym in years. Just tried squats while lifting nothing.

Hiked all the way up and down Montserrat yesterday, a 6 hour hike.

I'm sure everything will ache tomorrow, but there's nothing like the feeling of completing a difficult task that you set yourself.
