Why has "actress" been replaced by "female actor"?

Does anyone know when/why this happened? Recently I have been noticing this at award functions in the US, where they refer to actresses as female actors. Is the term "actress" considered a slight on womanhood or politically incorrect or something.....?

Well, actress is obviously such a slur on women... I mean I would find it abusive myself....

Female actor and Male Actor are completely safe when it comes to being politically correct..

Soon mummy and daddy will be replaced with male parent and female parent... Although they will probably be two gay men judging by the way things are panning out at the moment...

Any other suggestions?

I haven't noticed this at all. AFAIK the nominations are still for 'Best Actress' and 'Best Supporting Actress'.

In the recent Screen Actors Guild awards, it was like that. I don't know whether it has become an accepted standard or something....

I know in media classes you are no longer supposed to refer to actresses but actors.

I looked at language and gender last year and the reasons for and attitudes towards differential suffixes but I can't remember it now.
