It's too insignificant to even mildly irritate me.

I'm amazed at its accuracy.

My ISP is "ac.uk". That narrows things down...

heh, ive posted about his siggie elsehwere and i have a dynamic ip and also use a anonymizer, so all it gives me i is a big red X too. :]
and rich, theres nothing to be worried about, it doesnt log the ips The server knows those things because of the protocol. IP address is the easiest: the server must know where to send the data. ISP is easy too. Just run a whois on the ip address. Browser recognition is easy too ... browsers send an identification string to the server so that the server could take the browser into account. Wrap all this data in a (for example) php script that produces an image .. voila. :]

It's not exactly hard to find out your ISP. Each ISP has it's own allocation of IP addresses, each with the unique code for the ISP in question, included in the IP address. If the program cannot work out the full ISP, it will just work out what it can.

Different browsers connect to the internet in different ways so they are easy to distinguish. The reason why Langevelt appeared to be using IE6 is because XP's MSN Explorer uses the same method of accessing the Internet and reading the data, as IE6. They are basically the same program and because Internet Explorer is integrated so heavily into Windows, I'm pretty sure they use the same components.

The Windows version is probably worked out taking into account the version of the Browser you are using. Internet Explorer is the easiest, since you only have to take the Browser version into account, you are hardly likely to find IE6 on a computer running Windows 98...
With Netscape, it asks you during setup which version of Windows you have and then installs the correct version.
