    Russell Brand

Just interested to read people's opinions on Russell Brand.

As ya'll may or may not be aware old Brandy has been getting quite political and involving himself with various social causes over the past year or so, also releasing his book 'Revolution'.

Interested to know what you all think, as he seems to be stirring up debate and divinding opinions (lol Daily Mail) in the general community. Do you actually buy into the hype and believe that he genuinely believes in and practices what he preaches?
Or that he's just some hypocritical champagne swilling socialist cynically contriving this whole situation for his own benefit and that in 18 months time we'll see him as the leading actor in 'Get Him to the Greek II'.

Or just indifferent and not really arsed about the guy and this thread will just fade away into obscurity?

Personally I do believe that what he is doing is genuine and not just some publicity stunt designed to show off that he can be a multi faceted performing artist, a la 'I'm Still Here'.
Call me naive or whatever, but I like the idea that old Brandy is showing genuine concern for these causes and has the passion to fight for them.

I guess he'll always be judged in the context of his past and the fact that he's loaded which means to some people he's just a self inflated rambling hypocrite.

He strikes me as genuinely believing in what he says, but in my mind he is the archetypal champagne socialist, and is utterly obnoxious and just generally unpleasant.

He is the kind of person who can make a prima facie great point, but I will be inclined to disagree with just because he is so dire.

i can't stand his manner so i have no idea how well developed his opinions are because i avoid him. odious, pretentious prick.

apparently someone wrote him an open letter in the paper telling him off for invading his office and making his lunch go cold though. hot lunches are pretty important so string him up i say.

Yep. Total prick and anti-intellectual. Recycles exactly the same points the radical left has been making for half a century, and doesn't do it very well.

Yeah I get the impression that the majority of people who disagree with him do so on the basis that they simply don't like him.

It seems to me that most people don't even give the time to actually listen to what he is saying because as you guys say, they find him obnoxious/odious/pretentious.
So it seems heavily based on the fact that people simply don't like him, or don't like the way it's being delivered (he seems pretentious and stuck up his own arse), and not on the fact that they don't like what is being delivered.

Would be interesting to see if another less divisive, 'more likeable' celebrity who preached the exact same message recieved a more postive reception.

For example, if someone as loved as David Attenborough was preaching the exact same cause, even making references and analogies to the natural world to support his arguments, would he be receiving the same ruthless reception as Brand?

Tbf I find a lot of what he says to be unpalatable regardless of his own inherent direness. His whole "don't vote" thing is just retrograde drivel, for instance.

It's just that his loathsome demeanour will often override the merits of a good point, in the somewhat rare event he makes one.

I doubt it, but that would hardly be surprising in any event. People who express their views in a way that isn't totally obnoxious and condescending will almost invariably be given a worse reception that those who do so in a reasoned and understated way, regardless of the content of said views.

I really like his style, it's the content which is the problem for me. I seriously can't critique his position on anything because I have serious questions over whether he has truly comprehended just about any of the stuff he says. When he talks philosophy or politics, all I can think of is this comic.

The only person I have ever met that I actually liked is Garrus Vakarian. And that was in a dream. And he's not even a person.
