    Ridiculous Things That Cost More Than India's Successful Mars Space Mission

    So, India's Space Agency, ISRO, has been successful in managing to insert the Mars Orbiter Spacecraft into Mars' orbit. The whole operation is being touted as having cost Rs. 450 crores. This is Rs. 4,500 million, roughly $75 million.

    A similar project by NASA recently cost $671 million. So basically ISRO is awesome!

    This thread is dedicated to all the ridiculous things that cost or have ever costed more than this mission.

    It is a great achievement and the Indian Space Agency has to be congratulated - a feat like this is not easy and only NASA, Russia and the European Space Agency have done it. I think things like this ought to be encouraged. And the costs seem to be very low.

    That said, it's not apples to apples when comparing the cost of this to other projects, like MAVEN. For India, this is closer to a 'test' mission to demonstrate and work out their capabilities.

    Yeah I'd like to know what the $670m project was before commenting.

    When it comes to hosing money up against the wall, the UAE is the world champ

    Take Masdar City (Masdar City) as an example.

    When first announced, the group behind it hailed it as the world's first carbon neutral city

    Nothing wrong with this goal in a country that has the world's largest carbon footprint per capita BUT:

    1. Its' original budget of US$25 billion was a figure plucked out of thin air and the cost currently stands at 50 billion and rising;

    2. Given the cost blow out, they have lowered their sights from carbon-neutral to low-carbon and I can almost guarantee that it will drop any reference to eco benefits before it is finished; and

    3. It is funded by a sovereign wealth fund that that gets its' money from oil production and has other investments such as Etihad, Ferrari and Virgin Galactic so whatever benefits flow from Masdar are massively outweighed by the carbon output of their other interests

    The Novopay payroll "upgrade" in NZ's Ministry of Education cost more than $75m (Novopay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and they're still working on fixing it two years after roll-out at a cost of well over $20m. All kinds of success.
