    Studying Overseas

So about a month ago I got back from a short-term scholarship to Singapore, where the Government threw money at me to go study their public housing policy. Today I get an email offering me the chance to apply for another scholarship, this time for 6-12 months, to go anywhere in the overarching Asia-Pacific region. Problem is I have about 3 days to decide whether to apply or not.

Either I'm doing something right, or Tony Abbott sees me as a pressing threat and wants me out of here at any cost

I'm really torn on whether or not to apply; in some ways, it sounds like an awesome opportunity. On the other hand, it sounds somewhat terrifying and I really don't know if I'd want to head overseas and leave my family/friends/girlfriend for up to a year. So I'm asking those of you who have studied overseas, what were the positives and negatives? How did it go for you?
    My sworn enemy:

    Do it.

I haven't studied overseas myself, though I've lived overseas for the last two years, and it's the best thing I've ever done. I hate talking in cliches, but you develop so much as a person by exposing yourself to life in a different country. You meet people from all around the world, you experience different ways of doing things that you'd never considered before - which also gives you a great opportunity to critique and/or appreciate your own nation's culture, methods and so on - you become a lot more independent and confident in yourself etc etc etc. They're cliches, but they're true.

It's one of the things I regret most about my time at uni - that I never made the most of opportunities to go elsewhere. I did all four years of my degree in Auckland, and now I really regret that I didn't take advantage of exchange programs. I had similar concerns as you - leaving my family, leaving friends from my cricket club etc that I'd grown up with - but I realise now that it would've have been far more beneficial long-term to study overseas.

Trust me - in five years' time you'll be kicking yourself if you didn't do it.

Haha, the quality would have to be seriously low for that to happen. I'm not going to be challenging the 100 mark any time soon, at any level.

Do it dude. It seems worth it imo. Meridio gave some excellent points
And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW

Yeah we don't crap in the first world; most of us would actually have no idea what that was emanating from Ajmal's backside. Why isn't it roses and rainbows like what happens here? PEWS's retort to Ganeshran on Daemon's picture depicting Ajmal's excreta

Family will always be there and would surely be ecstatic for such an opportunity. If your gf doesn't like it then she's not the one for you. Go for it ffs
