Officials are saying it was, and the culprit was one of these: Buk missile system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not exactly the sort of equipment a ragtag rebel mob finds by the wayside.

    Oh man
Immediately remebered that Koren plane which "has been stopped" by the Soviet airforce in the 80s.

And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW

Yeah we don't crap in the first world; most of us would actually have no idea what that was emanating from Ajmal's backside. Why isn't it roses and rainbows like what happens here? PEWS's retort to Ganeshran on Daemon's picture depicting Ajmal's excreta

Seems like the least implausible explanation is Russia handing out post-Soviet weaponry wholesale. What a wonderful world.
    Edit: stupid phone

Either way, someone is (or ought to) get the world dropped on them for letting advanced military hardware fall into the hands of a bunch of children.

It would be kind of crazy if the rebels had this type of machinery. They wouldn't necessarily need it and you'd need trained people - e.g Russian troops or something, which would be hard to have deniability about if you were Russia. I think it's at least as likely it was the Ukrainian central government who did it by mistake.

@SS I've thought that but what would Ukraine have to gain? I don't think the rebels have a significant air force, certainly not one you'd need ground to air to overcome...

No, of course they didn't do it on purpose. I highly doubt it. Same as in 2001. They are probably understandably on edge with what's going on in their country and someone might have gotten spooked if they didn't realize what it was or had mistakenly misidentified it, or maybe it was some kind of exercise like in 2001. They could have easily thought it was a Russian spy plane or something like that.
