    RIP Nelson Mandela

He's an important enough figure to get his own thread.

Horrible news anyway, was a hero to all South Africans.

A great and inspirational human being.

Still a really sad day, despite it seeming imminent for a little while now.

A man for whom I suspect death will serve only to increase his standing - very possibly the greatest human being of my lifetime

Remarkable person, my words cannot do nearly enough justice to the man. Will be sorely missed.

I think the man's dignity was his greatest quality.

His statesmanship at the 1995 WC can't be underestimated. For a man who'd spent twenty seven years incarcerated to wear a Springbok jersey, arguably the single most recognisable totem of Afrikaner nationhood/pride, was such a wonderful, magnanimous gesture.

Vale. We really won't see his like again.

    - As featured in The Independent.

"The committee discussed the issue of illegal bowling actions, and believed that there are a number of bowlers currently employing suspect actions in international cricket, and that the ICC's reporting and testing procedures are not adequately scrutinising these bowlers."
    - Even the ICC's own official press release thinks things must change

    RIP. A truly great personage.
You take my pawn, I take your rook. You take my bishop, I take your queen. You take my knight, I buy Mayfair. Because while you were busy playing chess, I've been playing Monopoly the entire time.

"There is no passion to be found in playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

What a man. To go through what he did, then assume power and to do it without rancour or acts of retribution against those who kept his people down. One of the greats. RIP.

A good obituary by former-PM Malcolm Fraser, including a nice cricket-related section upon meeting him in 1986:

He had some preliminary things to say, however. He looked at me and said, “Mr Fraser, is Donald Bradman still alive?” Later I was able to take a bat to Mandela, signed by Bradman, with the following notation: “To Nelson Mandela, in recognition of a great unfinished innings”.
    RIP to a great man.
