Battle of the worst Australian towns

Following on from the English version a year or so back.

Cities, suburbs or towns are open for nomination. Must be somewhere you've had the misfortune to visit, second hand accounts are not allowed. Include a précis as to why your nomination belongs.

There's plenty of potential gold here. I'll kick off with the following:

Oodnadatta - any place which openly advertises itself as the "Arsehole of South Australia" must be in this. Nothing but desert for a million miles around it, and it's claim to fame is that the Birdsville Track ends there. **** hole of the highest order

Lightning Ridge - as above, only with opals. People go there to disappear. They pick the right spot. Bill Bryson described it in his book about Australia as the only place on earth he'd been to where the publican turned on the television and expressed marvel at the invention. It was 1997.

Blayney - if this isn't the coldest hole in Australia then I'd hate to visit the place which beats it. Dire place.

Anyway, there's your starters. Get in.

Moree. Drove through it a few years back. Horrible place - just urgh. It looked like total ****.

There's probably more, but that's the lowest of lows.

Interestingly, my granddad had the (mis)fortune of coming from Lightning Ridge.

Kilmore. It's close enough to Melbourne that anyone with any hope in life has moved away, and the dregs of society are left. Usually coz they have had a kid at 15.

Any country town where the pubs shut at 1am.

If you don't have a joint open till at least 3, you're kidding yourself.

Cloncurry, Queensland. When I was a kid driving through Cloncurry the attraction were the street bins were painted as different animals. That was the highlight.

Palmerston, NT Close to Darwin (is that a good or bad thing) but overall there just isn't much about it, costs of living aren't cheap for what you get too.

Albury and/or Wodonga - Are one town? Two towns? Are you in NSW? Are you in Victoria? Work it out.

Queanbeyan - Please don't let your people come in to Canberra until they grow teeth again.

Always thought Albury and Wodonga would be nice places and it wins points due to Lisa Mitchell too.

Some of you bois need to visit the outback to appreciate the **** towns on offer. Well, I guess it's subjective, some outback towns have real character.

Gold Coast. Just so fake and trashy. Looks good but they play to the lowest common denominator.
Mt Druitt. Just watch Housos or something. Dead end of a great city.

I'd nominate Adelaide but I've never had the misfortune of stepping into the town, thankfully.
