    Icon3 Louis Theroux

Last couple of weeks ABC2 here has been running his documentaries every night. I've watched pretty much them all.

What I want to know is what do you think of a) his work and b) him.

Personally I find him a bit of a knob at times who tries to take the moral high ground instead of putting himself in the interviewee's shoes, however I find a great percentage of his documentaries to be very thought provoking, in particular his documentary on paedophiles. The west boro baptist church one was good too, and the porn one was also pretty reasonable. You can get something out of all his documentaries IMO.

Damnit, I knew my second post would turn this into a thread about Brumbeh.

I like him a lot, I guess a lot depends on whether you think he's sincere in trying to connect to people, or just subtly taking the piss. Personally, on most occasions I think he genuinely gives it a go at sympathizing. So I don't find him condescending, oddly the one's he seemed to have most problems with were the Porn people, in the two docs he did.

The Weird Weekends, and the sleb one's, particularly Saville were good entertainment, often giving you real insights into people, you just know as caricatures, Westboro and the survivalists in particular, where he seemed to forge some relationships with really skewed people. Yet he showed their human side.

He's become a very good Documentary maker now, his Extreme Love on Alzheimers & Autism was some of the best and most moving TV I saw this year, truly breath-taking, sad, but up-lifting at the same time.

Would love to see why you think this tbh. I'm personally quite a fan and most that I've spoken to in Australia agree but I'd be interested in seeing whether he's held in high regard in the UK.

I find his faux-naif bumbling Englishman schtick a little wearing after a while, as, in reality he's neither bumbling (owner of an Oxbridge first) nor English (American citizen; famously the son of Paul Theroux), but it does seem to help him get great access and almost unfailingly gets his subjects' guards down. As I've mentioned in the Saville thread, his docu on the old pervert made the subsequent revelations seem inevitable, so his ends do justify his occasionally grating means.

He forever got my admiration when he refused to confirm to a neo-Nazi that he's not Jewish (he's not ftr) too. It was very ballsy stuff. Would have been very easy to say that he wasn't but his refusal to pander to a ****tard's prejudices and potentially putting himself in danger made for bravura viewing and showed there's a lot more to him than is immediately apparent.

TBF to Louis on the Englishness front, he moved here when he was 1, and lives here now, Mum an Englishwoman too, compared to some of our cricket stars he's pretty damn British.

Hey. stop holding it against the guy, I know it's heinous, but he holds dual citizenship, probably makes it a lot easier for him to make documentaries in the land of the gun too.

Just watched the Nazi one, as that was one of the ones I hadn't seen.

    Showed balls, no doubt.

He's very good at framing personal and possibly intrusive questions in such a way that he gets away with asking them. Lots of "Some people might say that what you're doing is..." and the like.

I've only seen a little bit of Theroux, but this reminded me of this...
