    Hokitika

I am in the mood to discuss Hokitika. For my money it represents everything about New Zealand.

Population 3000. I have never been there but I feel like I have. It will have a couple of pubs. A rugby field called "rugby park". Kids growing up there will plan on getting out of Hokitika and consider those who stay put as stuck.

The major industries of greenstone (pounamu), gold, coal, and forestry have all dwindled over the last century, but a growing ecotourism industry has grown up and the town is starting to show signs of recovery. It has become a major tourist stop on the West Coast's main highway route, with carving of greenstone an important local industry. It is also gaining a reputation for its annual wild food festival which has been running since 1990.[3] Seaview Asylum was once the town's biggest employer.[4]
Did you grow up in a small town or the city? If a small town what was it like?

Proudly against the bring back Bennett movement since he is injury prone and won't last 5 days.

I grew in a small hamlet which consisted of 6 houses on the side of a road in the middle of the countryside. No towns or villages for about 8 miles in either direction. Bliss.

I've been to Hokitika. Nice place, nice people.
