Ball Hutt - Help needed
Ball Hutt is either a place or a geographical feature adjacent to Mount Cook - can any of our Kiwis enlighten me as to exactly what it is?
If you can I'd also like to know if it can be accessed by road and, perhaps more pertinently, whether it could be in 1928 |

Interesting query.
Well, I suspect it should be Ball Hut and is a backcountry Department of Conservation hut which trampers can stay in overnight whilst out tramping in the backblocks of rural New Zealand. Hundreds of such huts dot the back end of beyond in NZ. Some are accessible by 4x4, but only a minimal number would be accessible in this way. As for Ball Hut, apparently it is "Perched on the edge of the Tasman Glacier moraine wall. Although this hut is only about 5km from the summit of Aoraki / Mount Cook, the summit is hidden from view. Good views of the Tasman Glacier and Malte Brun Range opposite." However, the most pertinent piece of information for you is that access is "Along old Ball Hut Road (foot access only) from Blue Lakes car park, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park." Note foot access only, but that there was once a Ball Hut Road. Personally, I'd suspect it to be highly unlikely that such a hut would ever have been accessible by road. Here's a picture of the hut today: Ball Hut: Aoraki/Mount Cook area backcountry huts

Hmmm... A quick scan on google suggests the Old Ball Hut Road may have been accessible by road at some point (car rental brochures put it in the same category as Skippers Canyon road, which I have driven and is wafer thin and thus rental agencies refuse to let you take hire cars down there).
Hence, I retract my previous statement. It may well be accessible by vehicle, it's certainly not one of the ultra-remote huts according to my Mount Cook and environs map. |

It's why I have produced an 'all you need to know' flyer on the topic.

'All you need to know balls' into the Googulator, first result.
Instruction Tip #6 - Get a Handle on Flyer Lies Ask for info on balls and get a dick.
