****s in the tour thread couldn't answer this - but will Amla observe the fasting associated with Ramadan? Or does he get certain concessions because of his job?

It's his choice really. I know many in the Pakistani team choose not to fast when playing matches. If fasting puts you in danger (and I would consider playing an intense sport like Cricket while fasting dangerous), then you are exempted from fasting. You are allowed to make up the fasts at a later date.

OTOH, there are a lot of athletes that continue to fast while playing. Hakeem Olajuwon used to fast in the NBA while playing games. I know a few American Football players that do as well. Personally, I consider it really dangerous that they do that and completely unnecessary.

So hungry.

smalishah84 20-07-2012 01:28 PM

one can forego fasting while traveling and Amla might take that option up........

traveling is defined at a very small distance from own city so Amla would only have problems were he to play in his own city

IIRC Javed Miandad was fasting during some of the matches in the 92 WC in aus....might be wrong

What is the point/objective of the Ramadan fast?

And his stats were better in Ramadan!

Ramadan teaches discipline. Fasting isn't just about refraining from food and drink. It's about abstaining from sin and worshipping God. For example not swearing, quarrelling/fighting, back-biting, being a better neighbour, reading more Quran and praying more.

A Hadith (sayings of the prophet) as narrated by Abu Huraira (a companion of the prophet):

The Prophet said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, God is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.
