24 Hour Scrabble World Record Attempt (in aid of Polio Plus)

I'm doing a 24 hour Scrabble world record attempt this weekend. It will take place this Saturday starting at 10am (GMT+1) up in Paisley, Scotland. The record is to score as many points between us (myself and Ray Tate) in 24 hours of playing Scrabble, the current record is 162,171 - so it's sort of a high-score Scrabble playing style.

It's being organised by the Rotary Club of Paisley in aid of the Polio Plus charity. There will be something online set up later if you feel like donating. The whole 24 hours will be streamed online. There's also a Facebook Page (you don't have to be registered with Facebook to view it) with the latest news, discussion etc.

QuipuTV Live - live streaming video powered by Livestream

Feel free to have a watch out of curiosity. I'll be the one without the beard.

Do you actually stay awake from 24 hours to do this? How many games do you get through?

Yes. We should get through over 200 games.

I ended up staying awake for longer than 24 hours when I went to Las Vegas two months ago (slow changeovers, late flights and Home Security morons making me miss my flight etc.), so I should be okay with this.

So you need to score like 400 points a game each? Wow.

I guess knowing that you are both going for high scores you can leave the board open for the other guy rather than being defensive.

Proudly against the bring back Bennett movement since he is injury prone and won't last 5 days.

Yea if we were playing like it was a normal game then we'd manage around 800-850 total on average, but with much more time to think obviously. We should average 850-900 playing for a high cumulative score.

I'm definitely going to watch the stream for a few minutes tomorrow.

Good luck, would be awesome if you break the world record. 24 hours of complete concentration could take its toll, do you have assistance from anyone else, making you food, getting you drinks, will you take toilet breaks in between turns?

Yes there's a whole bunch of people who're going to be keeping us fed and watered, taking scores and other notes down. In a normal game you have to keep score as well as announcing the move score before you press the clock,

Good luck Scaly. Your brain is going to be completely fried by the end of it. Not sure about the cause though. Polo is an excellent sport and the horses are well cared for.
