Know him mainly for his thoughts on (or against) religion and enjoyed a lot of what he had to write. RIP.

He's either saying "****! I was wrong!" or nothing at all.

RIP to his friends and family.

RIP. Was incredibly contentious but a true great of the written word. Too young

RIP. Great mind, even if he did go a little neo-con after 9/11.

Reminds me of the old joke about an atheist at his own funeral: all dressed up and nowhere to go.

Never liked him but was one of the greatest debaters and intellectuals of our times. At least he enjoyed his life to the full and didn't give a **** what anyone thought.

Yes that was a shame. I remember when he used to support the Palestinians and so on, but never supported Iraq during the US invasion.

Loved the debate he had with Galloway (which I think Galloway won).

One of the best. He just destroyed people with his arguments. Will be missed.

Why Christopher Hitchens Mattered | Reuters

From the article:

Quote:
I remember when Christopher Hitchens first said that if you gave Jerry Falwell an enema you could bury him in a matchbox.
Quote:
Once in a debate in San Diego I said something about the limitations of science to which he objected. “I have been at many podiums with the Rabbi” he said, “and this is so egregious a statement that I am going to give him a chance to retract it before I have to refute it.”

The man was always quality.

Why? He took on the arrogant. There's nothing so arrogant as claiming you have divine knowledge and revelation, that you're one of God's chosen people and the rest of us just didn't get the memo. I don't see why Hitchens is the arrogant one.

One of the finest orators of our time, and will be missed. I didn't agree with a lot of what he said - his support for war on abstract concepts in particular - but I'd be lying if I said he didn't inspire me as well.

Not everyone he argued thought they were amongst the chosen people. Hitchens was one of those Atheists who wanted to convert people from their beliefs. That is arrogance.

RIP. Was very sad to hear about his death.

Not someone I always agreed with, but you had to respect him, and he was a very entertaining writer.

Why Orwell Matters is a great read for anyone interested in Orwell as a writer, incidentally. Nice title for that obit.
