Darwin ATC sent two Qantas jets on collision course | Plane Talking
A near mid-air, this one in Darwin by RAAF ATC. They don't mention it in this article but I'm led to believe there was around 800' vertical separation between the planes. In other words, SFA.

ATSB chiefs admits he's not proud of Pel-Air report | Plane Talking
I'm sure that people not in aviation are probably wondering why this particular crash has exploded (so to speak). It's a significant case not because of the crash or that a particular operator has been negligent but because it would seem the organisation charged with investigating it, the ATSB, and the organisation charged with oversight of aviation here, CASA, are possibly proving themselves incompetent at performing those roles and, possibly, guilty of cover-ups for whatever reason. Stuff like this in other countries has seen their airlines banned from landing elsewhere like when the EU banned Garuda from entering their airspace. It's not just this incident, the recent incidents with that Virgin 737 which got 'lost', other lack of separate assurance and how well CASA has dealt with (or not) with Jetstar in the last two years is also coming up. You could say that.
Was chair of CASA for a couple of years in the 90's too so he'd know how decisions are often made. |
