It is the holier-than-thou attitude which I was objecting to.

The attorney was outraged that the crime happened on the US soil of a maid being paid less and how possibly the State government could turn a blind eye to such blatant human rights violations. However, the same US administration was silent when a US embassy official who enjoyed no diplomatic immunity gunned down two people and then a rescue vehicle ran over a third person. This was a much more serious crime than an employee being underpaid which was also atrocious on the part of the diplomat btw, but the US ensured Davis was let off and escaped without punishment.

When this is seen in context, the drone strikes, frequent military interventions in other sovereign countries, Nuclear bombs, secret prisons run by CIA, Gitmo, indiscriminate NSA snooping, the United States has been one on the biggest culprits when it comes to violating human liberties in the post WW-2 era. Of course, there are far worse regimes in the world, but none that possess anything even close to the military muscle that the US has.
It wasn't the Obama administration who brought about these charges you know? The attorney's office that brought this case about has nothing to do with what happened to Davis. Secondly, I am not even going to disagree with you in many of those instances (some of those I disagree with, e.g nuclear bombs and such, but that's a different topic).

I wonder if she is more likely to go to jail in India for the Adarsh scandal than in the US for this.

In an unrelated note, for those who follow the Indian political process closely, is there any chance on legally overturning the ban on homosexual acts?

Possible if a Curative petition or a Presidential reference to the Court is done and SC refers matter to a larger constitution bench. Review is still pending as well which govt. filed.

Or the govt. may just pass a ordinance for the time being and let the next Lok Sabha deal with it. But with BJP and other parties not supporting such a ordinance don't think it will pass.

Somewhat good thing is that the law is not being implemented anyway against homosexuals but needs to be overturned.

That's hilarious. They are holding the election on the 9th instead of the 7th, which would have stopped this ban. Bureaucracy FTW.

Although the fact that the entire Indian winter olympic delegation can comfortably fit in my car probably had something to do with the uncaring attitude of the IOC.

Yea, as I expected earlier, they granted her immunity to make the issue go away. I doubt she'd be stupid enough to ever come back but if she does, hopefully the US Marshalls escort her straight from the airport to the jail cell. This time, without the complimentary coffee too.

India should have paid diyat to the maid and got Devyani acquitted.

After all there is precedent of the United States doing the same thing in Raymond Davis's case where the shoe was on the other foot, except that it was for a much more heinous crime
    Get well soon Yuvi!!

As the victim, she was certainly entitled to some financial compensation for the slave labor. I'd have no problem with that as part of the process.

if she comes back on a diplomatic mission in the same position that she left, they cannot touch her...only if she re-enters the u.s in a non-immune capacity or if the indian govt waives immunity can she be prosecuted...and neither scenario is going to happen...

The US can refuse to admit her with immune status though as far as I know. Since as per the media reports, they're the ones who asked that she leave after granting her the immune status.

Wonder what happens to her and her family now ? After all they were "rescued" from India and Indian courts.

Do they all get US citizenship ? If so, she has played the system quite well.

Probably cause the elections are so near and this govt. is already seen as very weak they reacted this way.

Still cutting priveledges of US embassy and Consulate officials to bring it on par too what Indians get in the US. US had clubs/bowling alleys and what not in Embassy in India.
