Italy to Return Marine Murder Suspects to India
Italy to Return the Marines. ITSTL.
I only hope we won't have to wait for 20 years for the court to pronounce the verdict also in this case...

It's the pitch, stupid.
Interesting to say the least. Didn't expect the Italian government to return them as it seemed more and more some sort of underhand deal between the 2 governments.
But could take 3/4 years at least, though matters pertaining to foreign nationals have been tried faster in the past if the Courts and the government want too. Not sure what the bail conditions will be now , after this latest episode.
Indian judicial system currently needs a complete overhaul and more funds to be spent towards it in terms of staffing and infrastructure. The Backlog is huge and ludicrous tbh and often leads to "Justice delayed, Justice denied".

And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW
Yeah we don't crap in the first world; most of us would actually have no idea what that was emanating from Ajmal's backside. Why isn't it roses and rainbows like what happens here? PEWS's retort to Ganeshran on Daemon's picture depicting Ajmal's excreta

Interesting Old Interview with Yakub Memon, the guy who got Death Penalty in the bomb blast case. Tells, how he lived in Karachi in a massive house and with Pakistani passport and also other support from Pakistani officials.

They were not normal arms though. SanjayDutt was arrested on charges of acquiring three AK-56 rifles, nine magazines, 450 cartridges and over 10 hand grenades. And one illegal 9 mm pistol too, i think.
He claimed to be under threat in those troubled times in Mumbai, but acquiring all this from a known Don for self defence somehow doesn't meet the eye. And even if he did it was a crime.
And yeah generally, Indian law with relation to Illegal firearm possession is in the stricter range. Especially concerning heavy arms. His friend who he called from Mauritius after panicking due to a newspaper report about him having these arms got 5 years like him + 2 years extra for destruction of evidence.

And 5 years was the minimum sentence for this offence. He could have been given probation wherein after a while based on his behavior he could have been released early, but judges denied him that while reducing the sentence.
Govt or the Governor can still seek remission at a later date though.
wow.....that is strict.....but that is probably a good thing with these sort of things

About judiciary system, the slowness of our own is the only reason that our old PM hasn't passed the last 20 years in jail instead than as the leader of either the country or the opposition. Matter is too complex and a bit OT to explain it in details here in the Indian Politics thread, but he contributed a lot to push our courtrooms down the well, and now it won't be easy to put things right.
(I have been thinking about opening an 'Italian Politics thread', but it'd become a monologue, with people coming only to comment on Berlusconi's bets and comments about his female counterparts from other countries. Not worthy it)

Apparently, there has been a deal of sorts between the Italian and Indian governments and if sentenced, the Marines would serve their term in an Italian jail instead of an Indian one.
Get well soon Yuvi!!
