Rage at brutal rape erupts in India - Asia - World - The Independent

Massive protests today too despite every tactic used by government from imposing partial curfew in Delhi, to shutting down public transport and installing jammers.

Some turning violent too .Stone pelting and turning police cars upside down. Political elements taking over.

Yeah, they come in and turn it violent so the politicos then can crackdown. Disgusting,

These protests are un organised, so easier to do unlike Anna's last year where they were booed out.

Also, there were only 200 or so turning violent and they lathi charged all the thousands of people all over a huge area in different parts. Disgusting.

These are from the morning. In the evening the Crackdown was unprecedented particularly in Delhi. It was a Warzone almost.

Many media persons also beaten up, with equipment watered. Over 140 injured.

#delhiprotests We always lament that the youth doesn't participate in politics. When they do, the govt uses lathis, teargas & water cannons

I will believe delhi police that there might be anti social elements but does this given them a free card to charge at people

When an agitation is spontaneous govt does not responds, when it turns political govt spokepersons blame it! Is this a cruel joke?

Today's incidents underlined d failure of this govt. This is an inactive, irresponsible, insensitive govt which does not deserve to rule!

Let me repeat myself: this is not only about rape. This is anger against the corrupt establishment. Don't cheat, we need honest answers!

Shinde to CNNIBN: when Soniaji herself had met protestors, they shd have been happy. Sir, Soniaji is a politician, not our monarch.

Shinde to CNNIBN: When 100 adivasis are killed in Gadchiroli, shd govt go there? YES Mr Shinde, govt should go there!.

The way he said it too, reeked of arrogance. He isn't flustered about this at all.

at least the indian state machinery is well oiled.....

seems to have done a decent job of dispersing the crowds
And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW

Yeah we don't crap in the first world; most of us would actually have no idea what that was emanating from Ajmal's backside. Why isn't it roses and rainbows like what happens here? PEWS's retort to Ganeshran on Daemon's picture depicting Ajmal's excreta

haha.....tbf Putin would have preferred a much more violent suppression

the advantage of a lathi charge is that usually people aren't seriously injured. The indian police seems to have pulled out a decent one. How in hell did they manage to lathi charge a crowd of 50k+ though? That is some serious efficiency by a police force that isn't known generally for its efficiency

People can certainly get injured by this type of unannounced Lathi Charge of peaceful protestors. And the other force Police was using.

They were even firing 2009 expired tear gas. Ridiculous.

    Probably got orders from above.

They did similar in one night last year in Ramlila ground where one woman died in the melee too. Supreme court came down on them.

This government is the most stupid, incompetent and corrupt government in the history of India probably.

Manmohan Singh was propped up the same middle class, he has completely let down now. Absolutely Spineless PM.

They were worried that these protests will now gain momentum outside Delhi too probably.

Protests again gaining momentum today. Also, in Mumbai, Jammu, Bangalore.

Government has issued a advisory to Media, to not cover these protests but they are still doing it.

One Journo was saying that the media was under pressure to cover Sachin's retirement more than this for the last 2 days.

Home minister saying that do not protest because Putin is here. What impression will he get ?
