Yesterday, 12 hours after returning from Africa and with no sleep for 48 hours, I played my first cricket game of the season. I came back on to bowl the last of the 20 overs. I decided to severely shorten my run-up as it had been raining and footing and the ball were slippery.
1st ball and the batsman smashed it straight back at me and sconed me. My nose was badly broken and by forehead split open to the bone severing the muscles and risking loss of all facial movement around the eyes.
This photo is after 2 plastic surgeries to rebulid the nose and repair the muscles and close the wound.
Below is a link for those who want to see the before pic. Beware--it is NOT for the squeamish. I repeat-- if you have a problem with gaping wounds then do not look.

Anyway, I am very happy. An inch higher and I would have had a fractured skull and brain trauma that could have left my wife as a young widow.
