Yet another computer problem thread...

OK, so my laptop battery is at the end of its lifetime (nearly 3 years old). I need to get it replaced. In the last couple of months, I find the processor tends to overheat a lot lately, and as a result, the laptop shuts down abruptly. This makes it virtually impossible to watch any movies, listen to music, use youtube etc. because the laptop will invariably shut down in the process. I was wondering whether the processor overheating is connected to the battery being old.

I have a Dell Inspiron BTW.

Have the same problem as this ftr. Often find that it's a result of the fan being ****ed, and if I blow enough air into the vents on the bottom of my laptop the fan starts working and it immediately comes good again.

Same thing happens to my laptop. If it stays on for more than an hour I'm shocked.

It's happening to my 1.5 year old laptop right now but my laptop only dies if I play almost any game for more than an hour. It's overheating and crashing to prevent damage to the hardware. You could buy compressed air and clean your fan or go to a PC shop and get them to do it for you, but this problem will come back eventually, especially since your PC is 3 years old.

Also, don't buy those stupid USB fans which you put under your laptop unless you're sure it uses very little power and is not blocking the vents/fan of your laptop.

Inspiron batteries run 50-150 USD (at newegg), more at dell. The $50 ones will likely not last long. Compare this to a new inspiron, which starts at $300.

It's a bit like replacing the engine on a 10yo car - you'll have to carefully think about getting a new battery if this is a low end Inspiron. Perhaps get a new laptop and use the old one as a desktop.

Find putting it on top of two sturdy books and using any kind of fan (i.e. the type you find in a living room or someplace) to blow air in and around it works quite effectively.
