Open it up (get the manual online) and suck out all the dust. Also get PC Wizard (2010 is the latest) at download.cnet.com - it will report temps for your processors/HD. Mine are running at 46deg C and 47C, the HD at 44C and the GPU at 72C.

This makes it virtually impossible to watch any movies, listen to music, use youtube etc. because the laptop will invariably shut down in the process. I was wondering whether the processor overheating is connected to the battery being old.

I have a Dell Inspiron BTW.
I have the same problem. It was worse when I had Vista installed. I upgraded it to win 7. Now laptop works fine for about 3hrs, so i can finish one movie without shutting down. Still want to know if replacing battery will solve the problem. Mine is 2.5 yrs old Dell inspiron.

I use Ubuntu. Processor usually hits around 90 deg C () when it shuts down immediately.

Trying to boot OSX from the install disk to defrag the HDD. For some reason I'm not getting the boot option menu (or whatever you call it) on startup, the one which usually pops up when you hold the option key during startup.. I've tried everything the internet has so far offerred. It has thus far failed.

    Any ideas?
