I have a vaio pro 13 for work which weighs **** all and is fast as **** ( has an m2 PCI ssd which is >twice as fast as normal ssds) but I think Sony stopped selling laptops.

If you have a decent enough budget I'd look at a Surface Pro 2 - its basically a tablet with full windows 8.1 and a decent processor. Or for cheaper version there is the Surface 2 but that only has Windows 8RT

Avoid Windows RT! I has a tab with it, runs great but only because there's ****-all s/w for it.

And yeah there are torrent clients for all tablets (BitTorrent is perfectly legal, it's a great way to put legal and illegal stuff up for download) but I'm fairly sure there are copyright checking DRM things on most tabs.... It's easier to lock them down than full featured computers.

Ok thanks for the advice so far.

Now a few more questions. Im not entirely sure of my budget yet (look yes, without shame I have asked my parents for a graduation gift but I am yet to recieve confirmation) as i dont want to shell out heaps of my travel money.

What are some better budget options? If I have to go quite low on the laptop, is it better value to just shoot for a tablet?

If you're gonna rely on "acquired" files for entertainment, there's absolutely no point in getting just a tablet (unless it's a Surface Pro). You're also going to need a proper computer to transfer the files and back it up and such. You won't always have access to high speed internet during your travels to stream everything on the tablet.

True. Leaning towards a laptop to be honest. Just need to find out what is serviceable on a budget

I've just bought something similar to this. Mid-range, relatively thin, does the trick.

Thanks for the advice again. Just another question for the Europeans or others in the know.

Right now I'm in the middle of nowhere in Indonesia, so my plan is to order a computer on the internet and get it sent to my mates mums place in Paris where we are heading next.

Its so much cheaper to buy on amazon.com or ebay.com than the European counterparts..but am I going to get slapped around by import taxes...or are there some better options?

If you're on a budget...my network provider for my mobile do a lot of offers on pay monthly for tablets and laptops. Could you get anything like that?

EDIT - ignore that if you're already in Indonesia

Ok, if my plans are to jet off to Australia for a great deal of time and then also looking beyond that, I'm going to need something slightly more transportable than my 15.6'/3kg Toshiba Satellite.

As I've still got the laptop I'm not looking to spend absolutely masses on anything top of the range but more so looking for something at a good price which is a bit more travel friendly i.e. tablet or netbook. I recall some discussion about similar matters with Got_Spin not long ago and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for me?

I think my preference would be a tablet - so what's value for money currently? Cheers

Google and Apple releasing new tablets soon, should be able to pick up some discounts on previous models. Nexus 7 still rates up high in reviews and is more than a year old. I'll probably be buying a Nexus 9 when it is released.
