Battle of the bands - The Devil takes the hindmost format
To forestall any complaints, we have done BotBs before more than once, yes. However, a wrinkle in the traditional battle format is that it pits Band A versus Band B and Band X versus Band Y, which can skew the results if one's indifferent to Bands A & B but absolutely loves Bands X & Y.
To overcome this fankly glaring flaw I'm shamelessly appropriating the Pop Idol/X Factor format (it's about time some good came out of the shows) of having multiple contenders in each battle and ejecting the least supported bands each time. My thought is this: ideally we start with 100 bands and 10 battles of 10 bands in the 1st round. Voters then rank the bands in order of preference from 1-10 (or until one's indifferent) with points being scored from 9 for 1st down to 0 for 10th. The bottom two bands are excluded from the comp, leaving us with 80 bands for round 2. We then have 8 battles of 10 bands, leaving us with 64 for round 3 and so forth. Briefly the rounds should shape up like this: Round 1: 10 battles of 10 bands Round 2: 8 battles of 10 bands Round 3: 8 battles of 8 bands Round 4: 4 battles of 12 bands Round 5: 4 battles of 10 bands Round 6: 4 battles of 8 bands Round 7: 3 battles of 8 bands Round 8: 2 battles of 9 bands Round 9: 2 battles of 7 bands Round 10 & onwards: 10 bands reduced by 1 each subsequent round until we have a champion. Piece of the proverbial, eh? Everyone can have 10 proposals initially, which can be used as nominations or seconds. Once a band has two nods they enter the comp. This might be increased subject to take up.Don't be shy, people. Nothing to lose but your diginty and the respect of your peers. Happy nominating.
