    Christchurch earthquake

At least two people seriously injured, extensive road and building damage and blackouts

Hope all CWers in NZ are all right...I don't think we have that many Cantabrians?

My sister and her family live in Christchurch. They reported that it was like being in an amusement park ride when the Earthquake hit. They ran and got the kids out of bed. They still have their power on - but some of the neighbours in the street lost theirs.

My Dad is overseas and heard the news on the Internet and called her in a panic. Which is probably justified.

Christchurch mayor seems to know what he is doing on his interviews.

Proudly against the bring back Bennett movement since he is injury prone and won't last 5 days.

I'm in Timaru. It woke me up but the house stood up to it, so did the town as far as I can see. Obviously far worse in Christchurch. Lot of my friends have family up there but everyone seems fine at the moment. Called my parents in England to tell them not to worry.

Apparently there has been a bit of looting but for the most part the damage has only been to big old buildings that had a wall fall down.

Damage estimated at "hundreds of millions".

But it really is so lucky that no one was killed. Some unbelievable photos of the damage.

Are people's insurance policies going to cover the damage? Or do Insurance companies have loopholes for things like this?

I think most insurance companies have plans that cover earthquake damage, but I'd say most people wouldn't have that.

Despite the extensive damage, loss of power, etc., we're so lucky theres been no reported loss of life. In that sense it was extremely fortunate that it happened at 4.30am; I hate to imagine what might've resulted had the earthquake taken place later in the day with people out and about rather than in the relative sanctuary of their own homes.

On a lighter note, SBW's ITM Cup debut was certainly groundbreaking...

I'm not surprised at that estimated damage, I've been watching the One News coverage for an hour or so and some of the areas look like a bomb hit. Never seen anything like it in New Zealand before.
