Is constantly hearing music in one's head normal?

It's gotten to the point that I'm very conscious of it. It's started to drive me crazy.

I wake up in the morning and I'll have a song in my head. Usually it's a song that I'll have listened to a few days back, and it'll sit there replaying itself for days on end, until it's replaced by some other song. Sometimes its three or four songs on shuffle.

Of late, I've wondered if I'm not wasting 'brain cycles' on this crap, because I'll feel fatigued towards the end of the day the same way one would if he's been listening to music on the stereo or earphones for a long enough period of time. Besides, I eventually get sick of songs I liked at one point, because of the constant replaying.

Earlier it used to be part of the background, apparently not interfering with my day to day activities. I could be doing some pretty deep thinking, and once I'd finish with the task at hand I'd realise that the song had been playing on in the background the whole time. Now that I'm so much more conscious of it, I'll try and stop the music, but then I forget about it and it returns after a while. How annoying.

I used to think that life would be pretty boring if there were complete silence. Now I wouldn't mind if the constant music were replaced by crickets chirping or tumbleweed rolling around in my head.

I'm seriously considering taking up meditation or something.

Can anyone else relate to my problem? Would this be considered normal?

Reckon it's normal enough, unless the constantly repeating lyric is "Kill them all, kill them all".

Yea it's normal but I'd see a neurologist if it's getting to the point of interfering with your daily life...I don't think that's normal except when Justin Bieber releases a new song.

Yep, I'll often have 10-15 songs randomly cycling through my head during the day. There's no reason why half of them turn up either...

Joe you're losing it and going over the edge buddy. Its time for some drastic action on your part. Play some Britney Spears non stop, Hit Me Baby One More Time is probably a good one to start with.. That will not only put a pause on the songs in your head but turn off the music for good!!!

On a realistic note mate, get your 8 hours of sleep, not more, not less. I've found that things that were on my mind alot and dreams start becoming suddenly stuck in my head as if I'm already in them even while awake. Got the sleep problem sorted out and I'm fine. Also give the ipod or whatever gadget a rest for a while and chill out a bit. Go out, meet some friends and do more of that sort of thing.

But I don't own an ipod or any other portable musical device! It's mostly off songs playing on the TV or when I rarely play something on the stereo or pc.

Often have a tune in my mind, can vary to all sorts. But it's just thoughts. Do you actually hear it with your ears, or is it just thoughts?

Stop sounding like my mum. I coud listen to absolutely no music and still have this problem. I don't watch more than an hour or so of TV a day anyways to begin with.
