It's extremely high on the military's list of priorities. They have been trying to convince the government that it's needed because the F-35 isn't good enough to challenge the Russian T-50 or the Chinese Fifth Generation fighter.

I don't really know a lot about the topic, but they already have quite a few F-22 Raptors don't they? Wasn't one of the reasons (other than the obvious cost factor) they stopped producing them the fact that they didn't exactly need any more at the moment?

Cost was the only factor. They had planned to build way more than the 300 odd they have at the moment. But now that the Russians and the Chinese will start building their own, a need will emerge.

Why do you need to challenge those fighters? We're not going to be in a conventional dog-fighting airwar with either of those countries.

I don't need to challenge anyone. I was merely curious on this topic because I used to sneak around on defence forums and got interested in the subject (Plus I love that bird, it's so sexy). The USAF on the other hand has looks at threat perception and needs those aircrafts in case as a deterrent and to keep up with rival powers. They have been pretty vocal about the need for continuing the programme. There have been articles by USAF analysts about how dangerous it is for the US that Russia and China Are developing their own 5th gen fighters.
