As I said before - Bush won 44% of the Hispanic vote in 2004. Politically speaking, many Hispanics are conservative, especially socially. Its only immigration and the racist policies of people like that idiot sheriff in Arizona that's driving them away.

If someone like Jeb Bush or Rubio is the candidate, ie someone with a sane immigration policy, they could make significant inroads. They may not win the Hispanic vote outright but they don't need to. They just can't lose it 70-30 like they did this time around.

But there was a lot in their favour this time that won't be next time. People predominantly vote on economic lines, and apart from the context being moreso in favour of the Republicans than it's likely to be next time, the economy was Romney's major strength in the polls.

Hard to predict four years in advance- we'll see how good a candidate the Democrats churn out.

Yeah indeed but I think you're being a bit conservative. You have a population full of people out of work in a tanking economy, conditions were ripe for Obama to be a one-term President because it so rarely happens. If things look up, Rethuglicans are going to get their arses handed to them in 2016 and I don't think it matters too much who the Democrat candidate is (short of them pushing for Sharia Law).

I just don't think you can conjecture very accurately. In 2000 no one saw 9/11 and the war in Iraq coming, in 2004 no one expected the financial crisis and in 2008 the tea party were nothing. Over the course of four years there's a pretty good chance we'll get an unforeseeable incident with heavy political consequences.

What heavy consequences? In the wash-up (hindsight, etc.), the crash didn't do much to Obama's affect re-election nor did the rise of the Tea Party types do much to get the Romneybot in. The Tea Party types were mostly roundly defeated, really. It's all too high-level political bickering for real people to give a **** where the rubber meets the road, I reckon.

Have said it all my life, all rhetoric, politics and nastiness gets made redundant come voting day; everything changes for people who vote once they're in front of a voting booth. All of Romney's pandering just meant that when people actually had to cast their vote, they had nothing their gut could really cling to as a solid position on, well, anything other than "He's religious".

    Again, hindsight, 20/20, etc.

    Haha, yes.

Just a delightful photo. The slightly sullen-looking woman trudging off with the now-unneccessary cutout... Makes me chuckle every time.
