I did go to Auschwitz in the end. It wasn't quite what I expected, a bit more touristy than I'd hoped. Birds of all types sung at Auschwitz when so many people I've spoken to said that it's creepy that no birds sing there. Crows cawed, seagulls squawked, swallows swooped and chirped and sparrows chirrupped.

Some people do really treat it like a tourist trap than a place where some of the world's greatest atrocities were committed. Some American tourist was pocketing bits of stone from different parts of the site, people taking photos of themselves smiling in spots where people were executed. The week after I was there, someone even made a video to the tune of I Will Survive featuring a holocaust survivor.

It is weird. I made the fatal error of going to Madame Tussauds (which has lost some of its charm since they exceeded any form of fire safety regulations by letting ****ing everyone in) and couldn't help but feeling a bit uncomfortable as people put their arm around Hitler doing the Nazi salute. Maybe I'm just a bit precious, but it struck me as pretty ordinary.
