    Five smartest people you know

In your life (either online or real life), who are the five smartest people you know/have spoken with?

I actually have to think quite a bit, I deal with a lot of very intellectually intimidating people. One of my physics professors for sure, but I'd have to think on the rest. I've met a couple of Noble Prize winners and a Fields Medal winner, but I haven't really spoken to them much or 'know' them, so I don't think I can put them.

Ugh, one American word I really hate... and yeah with Neil here, there is a big difference between a someone with amazing logic and brainpower, someone very knowledgeable, or someone capable of analysing and commenting.

You guys are smart enough to come up with your own definition .

To me, it would include a combination of all three mentioned above.

Okay I will name the people and try and tell why I think they qualify. Might as well pay respect due to some of them by picking up their pictures from the net where available.

    1. VG Nambiar : My boss (CEO) - 1978 to 1981.
    • Amazing clarity of thought
    • Supremely positive outlook
    • Led by personal example in a manner that has to be seen (or heard) to understand

    2. Vittal Mallaya : Boss again (Group Chairman) - 1982-1985
    • Financial Wizard
    • Deceptively intuitive. I say deceptive because he spoke so very little that you could miss what he said.

    3. M.P. Taparia : Another boss (Chairman) - 1985-1991
    • Remarkable capacity to zero in on the crux of the matter within an amazingly short time of the start of a discussion
    • Unmatched clarity of thought
    • Unwavering focus and incredible power to shut out all irrelevant detail
    • Extreme brevity of expression without ever not being crystal clear
    • Fantastic built-in time clock

Jean Marc Paturle : Friend (1995 - till date)
    • Intuitive ability to almost smell business opportunities
    • Much envied (by yours truly) capacity to switch off from the complexities of running a large industrial setup at will.
    • Fine sense of humour inspite of being French

These are four people from whom I have learnt most in my life. This is a chance to say it

A half-Chinese bloke called Tommy, who was on my Engineering course last year. He just understood and implemented everything immediately with utmost ease. SS once said on here that 99.9% of people have to practice doing Maths to learn it, just like any other skill. But this guy just watched someone do something while barely seeming to be awake then immediately replicated everything with full understanding minutes later. I've never met anyone else like that. Most people succeed academically with some sort of combination of hard work and determination, but this guy seemed like he was doing the (very difficult) degree for the fourth or fifth time.

I was doing Chemical Engineering, but it wasn't for me. I'm looking at getting onto Economics.

Yes, absolutely. It's a very rare skill. I pick up math really fast compared to most other math majors, but nothing like my professor who just 'gets it'. I have to work at it - a rare few are just born for it.
