2 lists would be good, 1 for events held each year and then one for events like the olympics, world cups etc...

yearly events:

1 Tour de France (cycling)
2 Wimbledon (tennis)
3 Formula 1 World Championship (F1)
4 World Series (Baseball)
5 Champions league final (Football)

other events:
1 Olympics
2 Football World cup
3 Rugby World cup
4 The Ashes
5 Commonwealth Games

non-yearly events:

on a general Australia scale, I'd say:

- AFL Grand Final
- NRL Grand Final
- Boxing Day Test
- Melbourne Cup
- Australian Open Tennis

non-yearly events:
- Olympics
- Rugby World Cup
- Cricket World Cup
- Soccer World Cup
- Commonwealth games


For me though;

I guess the main thing to go on is viewing figures and coverage(worldwide).
