When you were a small kid....
....What do you used to think that made it rain?
I used to think that Bhagvan Ji (God), who was sitting on the clouds, opened up water taps and the water started coming on the earth.

Since the age of 11/12 - Depending on the time of year and other weather conditions, either convectional uplift producing cumulonimbus and thunderstorms due to a temperature inversion, or an advancing weatherfront and the concepts of adiabatic lapse rate leading to the amount of water in the clouds exceeding their carrying capacity and voilą - orographic precipitation. 8D
Seriously, I've had a fairly good grasp of the hydrological cycle since I was 6/7... I can remember the phrase "God's emptying the toilets in heaven" being used when I was 8/9 - not that I ever believed any of that

I have no idea when I first realised that it wasn't holes in the sky or clouds bumping together, but I seem to recall that when I was 5 or so I watched a thunderstorm deposit an inch or so of hailstones.
The following day, the same thing happened. I made up my mind that the thunderstorm had travelled all round the world in a day.

Well year in year out we get hosepipe bans in SW England, like there are droughts every year or something ...
It actually doesnt rain all that much here, when i was in Sydney they apparently get more rain than most parts of England.. In England its just light rain for ages and ages, thats why it seems like we get so much... |

East Anglia/Lincolnshire [Anglian Water] has the lowest rainfall in the UK (look it up - westerly winds, mountain ranges..) - technically it's classed as semi-arid, and even has less rainfall annually then Beirut [Lebanon] yet I cannot remember a hosepipe ban... |
