    Golden Key

So, I was wondering if anyone here was a member/ever invited to join the Golden Key Society? It's the second year I've been invited, but it seems a bit like paying a lot of money for nothing to me. Opinions of members or ex-members on my campus range from "Brilliant! Go join!" (BA students and BComm girls) to "Rubbish, they take your money and all you get is one free dinner a year." (BComm guys and engineering students).

    Any opinions?

Generally, if you want to do further academia, it might be useful as something to put in your CV. I don't think it helps in terms of career in the private sector.

Don't think it really offers anything beyond 'putting it down on CV/Resume'. But that part might be important enough to justify the fees.

About as useful as Mensa. That is, not.

EDIT: Unless you plan on entering a career where your contacts really help you along, like Law. Otherwise, it's something for parents to brag about a la "My child is on the honour roll" bumper stickers.

I don't even remember if I joined or not in undergrad. It has been of no use to me in a profession where a more specific (ie. membership to a related area of interest) or personal (ie. know the right people) affiliation is required to have an advantage. Golden Key just seems far too diverse and unwieldy to be of any advantage other than fluffing up your CV.

Got invited last year, everyone I asked who had joined told me not to waste my money.

Hmm, thanks, pretty much what I expected. I'll give it a skip then.

Well, do you have further academic studies in mind? If so, it may help, especially if the costs aren't that high.

Well, I have a bursary from the private sector that pays all my studies up to masters, and after that I have to go work for the company for four years. I don't really know if I'm going to do a PhD after that, but I doubt it. The membership fee is R 450, which is about $51 ($60 if you want a lapel pin...), and that's quite a lot of money for me.

Well, in the long scheme of things, if its a one time fee, I'd do it.

Honestly, I'd be embarrassed to put crap like that on my CV.

Well, it'd be embarrassing in normal situations, but academia tends love that type of thing. At least around here.
