A lot of the bands that get talked up round here don't chart much as far as I know

Yeah, there's no correalation between the godlike genius of a band and their chart position. Some are great and successful (Beatles, Kinks, Madness, Jam) and some are great but wallow in undeserved relative obscurity (American Music Club, Buffalo Tom, Thin White Rope, The Triffids).

There's a definite kind of indie snobbery about loving obscure-ish groups. I'm really pleased the utterly wonderful Elbow are finally getting the kind of sales their music deserves, but at the same time I feel a bit resentful of all the Johnny-come-latelys. I've been here since 2000; where the **** were you?! Guy Garvey, who's a great, witty bear of a performer, himself acknowledged this at their gig at The Corn Exchange in Cambridge; he said "This gig sold out before we won the Mercury, so we know we're amongst friends". Wouldn't have taken me much to turn for him after that.

Don't worry Brumby, I'm not one of those Johnny come latelys.

Mind you, that's because I can't stand them

You Am I
Sigur Ros
Arcade Fire

(There are more...but I just woke up and can't think...)

I think most of the decent bands fly under the radar when it comes to charting in popular music charts. Occasionally they'll pop up with a single or two, but I don't think the charts are a valuable indicator of what's good. I saw an interesting program a few years back on how the record companies manipulate the charts, but it was so long ago I can't remember enough of it to quote anything here.

Best live band I've seen. It almost seemed to be stealing from them to pay $17.50 to see them at Jive in Adelaide. They're doing well enough to be playing the Big Day Out regularly at least.

On a completely different note musically, the best band I've ever seen live, by a pretty far distance ahead of quite a few much more prestigious performers, are Against Me!.
