Jellyfish
When I was a kid I was on the recieving end of a nasty sting from a Bluebottle. I developed what I think is a fairly rational phobia towards them, now I am back in the water and these critters are interfering with one of my favourite pastimes, bodyboarding.. Water was absolutely full of them today, I cover myself head to toe in wetsuit, sailing boots, even neoprene gloves, but still am a complete state in the water sometimes.. Has anyone else been on the recieving end of one, or has to put up with beaches that are full of them? Fed up tbh.. What tips are there for avoiding them? Apart from the obvious "stay out of the water"

All you can do is pick the right times to swim. If they are everywhere in the water there's nothing you can do to avoid being stung.

You guys don't get the Box Jellyfish or Irukandji off the coast of South Africa? That would be something you don't what to get stung by.

It's fine really. Well off the beaches of the Gold Coast anyway, but up north you have Saltwater Crocs to worry about. Don't go for a swim off the beach up around Darwin, because if the Crocs don't get you, the jellyfish will, and if they ever took a day off, the sharks will get you.

Worst thing up here, the weather is ****ing glorious now the hurricanes have pissed off, however to swim at the beach you have to stay inside stinger nets, hardly exciting stuff. Give me NSW beaches anyday with proper surf etc.

We get a heap of them at home in Kingscliff when the wind's blowing onshore and it brings them all in. Doesn't really affect things too much though as the surfs usually bad then anyway. Although they do hang around for the fews days follwing too sometimes. I've seen some massive ones the last couple of years. Was stung by one when I was younger around the stomach...wasn't that pleasant.
