Hard to imagine this happening in a civilized country.
At least, when you see clips of the Taliban doing something, you have the certitude of knowing that you are dealing with barbarians.

Speaking of which: SS needs to be more clear what he wishes for; as "renaissance" in some parts of the world has a Talibanic connotation to it which is far different from "the Renaissance" you are referring to.

Point taken, but I was confusing a moderate Arab state with civilized. Dubai isnt Saudi Arabia.

Interesting, a lot of South Africans go to Dubai, lured by the massive amounts of money and relitive lack of crime, but it's a weird place for sure and I'm not sure I could live somewhere where you basically live amongst your own expats and can only have limited amounts of fun.. One lady went missing last year and the police were basically saying stuff along the lines of "So what? Not our problem".. Another more laughable incident was the Brits caught having sex on the beach.. Nice place for a holiday but don't go with any sort of libido..

Not separating little children from their mother is not a particularly modern concept.

There really are a lot of ignorant statements written on here about Dubai

Firstly, the place is safer than virtually any other place in the "civilised" world

Secondly, it is party central with a huge amount of bars, hookers, gambling dens etc

Thirdly and most importantly, it is part of a Muslim country and so certain acts are considered to be criminal offences and the punishments are heavy e.g. screwing on the beach and adultery. However, the reality is that it goes on everywhere and you only get in trouble if a complaint is lodged or you flaunt your actions.

As an example, the brits caught on the beach were intially given a warning and told to move on but stuffed themselves by telling the cops to mind their own business and to basically **** off - where in the world could you get away with that?
