Brain Teasers

Have been getting quite a few brain teaser emails lately, and have quite enjoyed them so I thought I could start something similar here on CW. I was thinking along the lines of one persons posts a brain teaser, the first person with the correct answer then posts up a new one etc. etc. Will probs fail, but anywho

Here's a relatively easy one to start:

I have one, you have one.
If you remove the first letter, a bit remains.
If you remove the second, bit still remains.
After much trying, you might be able to remove the third one also, but it remains.
It dies hard!

What is it?

Oh, and could a mod change the thread title so it's two words please

3 gents went to a hotel, the room cost $30, they all payed $10 each, then the manager realised the room was only $25 so he gave the bellboy $5 change to give to the men, the bell boy looked at the change and asked how he would split it up between the 3 so he kept $2 and gave each man back $1 each.....where did the other dollar go?

The men have each paid $9 for the room...9x3 = $27 plus $2 for the bell boy = $29

When you factor in the refund, they've, in effect, paid $28 for the room, not $27.

Actual cost of the room = $25. Amongst 3 guys, that means $8 + 1/3 of a dollar each. Add the $3 they get back + the $2 pocketed by the bellboy = $30.

But the three men havn't paid 8.33 each...they have paid 9 each as they each paid 10 and received 1 dollar each back. 10-1=9

That's why I said, owing to the cost of the room ($25), they've effectively paid $8.33 each. It's a misdirection problem.
