If you are not averse to assemblig it yourself, I could throw together a very nice system for $1500 - probably much better in quality and performance than a similarly priced system you could get from a store.

Comes out to exactly $1500. You can downgrade a bunch if you want if you're not into gaming and stuff.

Jbhifi has some good deals on pre-built, Dick smith does as well. Harvey Norman is another good idea. for 1500 you should get around (aim for better )

In the same boat as Jono here. Could get you cost price employee discount for any IBM product but it generally takes a couple of weeks to get it all done.

Seconded. Can build a world class computer for less than 1000 dollars (minus cheap peripherals and operating system). And where talking the best Core 2 Duo and GTX260.
