Round here there is an unwritten rule that it is fine to stand still on the escalator if you stand on the right, but the left should be left clear for anyone who wants to walk

Yeah, I always found it strange in the UK that they drove on the left but walked on the right. It's confusing.

Yeah, you're right. I actually think it's strange that they drive on the left but overtake on the left (on the escalator, not the road), which as someone said earlier is the opposite to us. Then again, considering you don't have someone coming down the escalator in the opposite direction it doesn't really matter I guess. It just takes a bit of getting used to when the opposite happens here.

It makes sense though doesn't it, drivers want to see the fear in a pedestrians eyes before they perform a hit and run, its less fun otherwise.
