Round here there is an unwritten rule that it is fine to stand still on the escalator if you stand on the right, but the left should be left clear for anyone who wants to walk

It was everyman for himself in the London Underground, good that people do get out the way though, grinds my gears when people on really slow escalators block anyway past.

Yeah, you're right. I actually think it's strange that they drive on the left but overtake on the left (on the escalator, not the road), which as someone said earlier is the opposite to us. Then again, considering you don't have someone coming down the escalator in the opposite direction it doesn't really matter I guess. It just takes a bit of getting used to when the opposite happens here.

Do you mean the road or the footpath

I could have sworn I remember finding myself walking into the oncoming pedestrians many a time in the UK as they walk on a different side of the footpath. It may have been somewhere in Europe though.

I mean road. So if there is no pavement and you have to walk on the road, you walk on the right so you are facing oncoming traffic

It makes sense though doesn't it, drivers want to see the fear in a pedestrians eyes before they perform a hit and run, its less fun otherwise.
