The Zimbabwe thread

Really fond of the place after many a holiday there, back in the good old days, and have many close friends from there..

Leaders from all over the world are now calling for military action against Robert Mugabe, too late now I feel, although better late than never I guess..

South Africa have a new opposition of breakway members from the ANC who plan to form their own government.. I doubt they will be elected as early as 2009, but their stance is promising, and our likely president Jacob Zuma was fairly outspoken on the issue of Zim while Mr Mbeki just sat back and chillaxed for half a dozen tragic years..

If Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe refused to step down voluntarily he should be removed by force, senior Congress of the People (COPE) member Phillip Dexter said.

Lets see if it happens though...

Have my doubts personally.

Because, it's been in such a bad state for the last couple years, something should have been done in that time, not now when the economy is very bad and could possibly make no return soon.

Well yeah I have my doubts that it will happen, and even if it does, it's too late.. I guess it's better than talking of "quiet diplomacy" though

I don't think military action is likely because any invasion would have to be a primarily African Union operation, and the force would have to be drawn from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique and I can't see any of those nations being willing to commit themselves to what would be a long occupation of Zimbabwe. Moreover, the American and British forces would not be able to contribute for both logistical and cultural reasons. The only way it would work would be if the UN can agree on a resolution (which has not even been tabled yet) and it is still entirely possible China would veto it, as they have done with less belligerent moves in the past.

True, half of those nations are involved in trying to sort out the mess that is the DRC at the moment as well.. I find it somewhat disappointing that the most powerful nation in the world sings from the same hymnsheet as Mugabe.. While South Africa exhibited a typical African response of "lets find someone else to pass the buck to, wait before it gets out of hand, and then talk about cleaning the mess up"

I'd tell you, but by the time you read my post it would be inaccurate.

Haha, in both houses too. Mind you, i'd love to sit and watch someone try to break into my house and have their fingers shocked off. That'll learn 'em. Electric fences are the best security feature since trap doors.
