A Third World Country

I see a lot of people feel insulted by Matt Hayden's remarks about calling India a 3rd world country. I am not trying to defend Hayden's comment nor trying to attack him for saying what he said. Infact I dont even want to bring cricket into this discussion, that's why opening this thread in OT.

What I am trying understand why this 'Third World' remark considered offensive to some folks ? What do they think really makes a 'Third World' country and why their country isn't one ?

India is a third world country, no matter how much it has progressed, it still remains one of the poorest countries in the world

"Third World" is a pretty dated term.

"Developing Country" or "Less Developed Country" or "Emerging Nation" are terms that are used in academic circles.

Clearly Matthew Hayden is no academic.....

No, just a great cricketer.

I think the International Monetary Fund refer to India as a LEDC...

Indeed. You can take your moon missions, second largest military force, nuclear warheads and 300 million middle class but when over 70% of your population live in abject poverty and over a quarter of the worlds poor come from India, then you’re hardly anything to write home about.

Say what you will about China but they took more people out of poverty in five years than India has ever done since independence and India has the greatest democracy in the world...

Hmm, wasnt the origins of 3rd world nations derived from Cold War terminology. The 1st World being the West, 2nd World being The Commies, 3rd World being Countries under neithers protection, and possible areas of interest (ie, next one thats getting invaded in the name of democracy)

Now if Hayden is the historic buff i believe he isnt, technically he'd be factually correct.

But something tells me he didn't mean it in that way.

The meaning has changed over the years since that meaning is no longer relevant. Language is funny like that.

"I'm having a pretty gay day today, so I decided to go outside and puff on a fag."

He might be, but the intended meaning of Hayden was "underdeveloped" for linking it to creating chaos everytime. That's why it caused such an uproar.

It's a dated term and is not used in the same meaning as it's original one. It can be an insult to a developing country like India, China etc.

I think there is a certain global living standard, and if a certain percentage of your population are living below that you are classed as 'developing'.. Third world is a term from the Cold War as said already.. I fail to see how India can be classed as anything other than "Developing" at the moment..

In terms of creating chaos, well, I guess from a naive cricketers point of view, IE Matt Hayden, it wouldn't be my first choice of tour...
