There was this report in the papers today about this German doctor who settled down with his wife and kids in a rural area in Australia. He is the only Internist serving a population of 54,000 there. He's applied for permanent citizenship and the authorities have denied his 17 year old son citizenship because he has Down's and apparently that would place a burden on society to support him.

yeah, that was a case of bureaucracy gone mad. Happily the media attention has apparently prompted the minister to personally review that case, so hopefully the decision will be reversed.

Yeah petitioning the minister was the last option after going through the bureacracy, looks like the minister has jumped in earlier too.

And bloody fair enough too. Why put this family through more crap? Here we have a doctor working in a rural setting (the only one in Horsham!), he wants to stay there, the community loves him and because his son has a Down Syndrome score in the 90's (1 = profound, 100 = very mild disability), they want to send him back! Horrible decision.
