MTV got better tonight

Amazingly, MTV showed Metallica live from Rock am Ring tonight - just over 2 hours of the rockingest, rawest, heaviest metal I've ever seen on the channel.

Metallica's set list drew heavily from their first (classic according to officionados of the band) four albums, with just a couple of token songs drawn from the heavily panned (or heavily praised, dependent upon which review you read) 'St Anger' album.

I'd be interested to hear what anyone who saw the gig thought of it. Personally, I thought that it was (for the most part) the best performance I had heard from Metallica in about 10 years.

For me, the highlights were 'Battery', '(Welcome Home) Sanitarium' and 'One' - in my mind the latter being the greatest single performance of any one song I have ever heard in my life.

8.5 chainsaws (I thought Maiden deserved 9 chainsaws on Friday)

Shocking...from the channel whose closest associates are Britney Spears and NSync.

Might as well do now. That'll never happen again!

Anyway, I bought St Anger (the album) today. Played it 3 times - now I'm going to leave it 5 days and play it again.

(that's always my test of whether I really like (or hate) an album - or whether my first impressions can be trusted (or not)).

Ahem. Nested parentheses. Ugh.

Never trust first impressions of music. It's usually totally wrong...
