No, not the esteemed poster Long Hop Cassidy, but the Large Hadron Collider in CERN is set to be switched on at about 0300 GMT on September 10th.
My thoughts being that this is all pretty cool and I can't wait for the wormhole to be opened in Switzerland tbh. |

Absolutely stoked at this. I can't wait to discover the Higgs Boson. I rather hope we discover something else though, it's about time there was a big shakeup in particle physics. We need to do something about String Theory, once and for all, and while it is doubtful anything produced will corroborate or disprove the M-Theory model, one can hope.
I haven't really been this excited by a scientific prospect in my lifetime.

The world as we know it will end in 2012, so be prepared. This could have something to do with it.

Large Hadron Collider? I only just met her.
EDIT: I'm with SS on this one, physics needs this big time to get the popular vote but, in reality, once it's turned on, there will be a pretty significant feeling of underwhelm. Need more physics stuff to capture the public a bit because biology has dropped the ball of late, chemistry is always there but rarely has big moments and maths creates crazy bomber people.

Well, we all HOPE we'll be underwhelmed. I've seen these things before on those Discovery Channel shows about the end of the world.....

The Big Bang Experiment
Any other "I want to know everything" types like myself following this? They're recreating the big bang in a giant tunnel thing tonight (I'm talking NZ time). Started at 7pm (NZT) and apparently the particles will be going fast enough to make an effective crash early tommorrow morning (NZT). According to the loud and gloating NZ media, an NZ scientist is involved, though iirc most are Swiss. Fascinating stuff, love the element of risk too. Apparently there's a 2% chance a Black Hole could be created, which means we die, but I'm not too worried. It'd be cool to die in a black hole anyway, and it'd save going a zillion light years away to have a look at one. If we don't all die then hopefully we'll find out some pretty good stuff about the universe.

According to Stephen Hawking, nothing will happen. Make of that what you will.

Would solve Global Warming, Overpopulation and Paris Hilton as well. Can't believe we haven't thought of making a black hole already. |
