Read Vicious by VE Schwab. Really impressed, feels like tons of things the author did shouldn’t work at all but they do somehow.

Does anyone ever get the feeling that the world is conspiring to prevent you from reading? Like yesterday I wanted to finish a book chapter which shouldn't have taken too much time given it's about a topic I've extensively read about. The book is also huge, so some quick reading would have been particularly useful. But things kept popping up to stop me which I was too polite to prevent. Grrr.
And come what may we're unstoppable

Think the worst thing which has happened is that with age I am able to see how things are wrong, how the writer is trying to manipulate me or the story, how a twist is forced, how the writing is bad etc etc and that kind of kills a lot of stuff for me. Didn't happen earlier.

This is true, but it also helps you to differentiate between work that is superficially enjoyable and that which is legitimately great imo. Obviously all fictional work is contrived, and so authors will always to a degree do the things you mention. The really great authors, however, are the ones who stop you from realising they are doing it.

I enjoy books far more as a result of understanding that stuff.

I do enjoy books with bad writing less than I used to though. Bad dialogue especially.

This sort of thing is much much much more irritating in TV shows and movies imo.

I read less as an adult because I find it harder to disengage from the world for hours now. It makes me sad

Tbf Audilble won't help you read more. I have tended to avoid audio books since I realised how much enjoyment I actually derive from the physical act of reading as opposed to just listening or watching or whatever.

It helps me read far more tbh. I can have it on during work or while playing an undemanding game, or when walking, or exercising.

That’s listening though, it’s not reading.

Yeah learning and identifying all the tricks and techniques authors use in writing literature is what enjoying writing for its own sake is all about.

I don't think this is true at all, personally.
