If anyone enjoys a good autobiography/ non fiction work, A B Facey's A Fortunate Life is a classic. Pretty much mandatory in Australian schools. He was by no means a polished writer, but that just makes it all the better in this instance.

Amazingly, my local Whitcoulls finally has A Song of Ice and Fire in stock.

Anyhoo, Wheel of Time, worth the time to get into it?

Not as good as ASOIAF. Starts of pretty good. After 5 books though it slows down a lot before picking up its pace from the 11th book. Has its good points though.

The final three Sanderson is writing would work well as a standalone trilogy imo.

I enjoyed the WoT books, but there is a lot of filler and Jordan, whilst ironically trying to be a feminist, comes off pretty mysoginistic at times with his "strong women".

I still reckon if I ever had far too much time on my hands I could give the damn things a good edit and fit the first eleven into five books. Dress descriptions and forest descriptions will be the first to go.

Now that is interesting. Can you please post a few of the points that he mentions?

I really like good analyses of geo-political situations given that it is coming from somebody like Kissinger
And smalishah's avatar is the most classy one by far Jan certainly echoes the sentiments of CW

Just started off with the beginning chapters where he's talking about Chinese culture and early modern history. At the moment he's analysing the conditions that have led to the particular way in which the Chinese view others

I'll post more up as I go along for you.

I've studied Chinese politics and modern history quite extensively at uni. Fascinating stuff.
